The Rush 10/6 - 10/13

This week I was debating whether I could pull off a RUSH, mostly because I am on day 12 of a 14 day work week. The good news is that there are so many fantastic events this week, that I was unable to let them pass by sans recognition. Here is this week's late but lovely line-up.

True cultural dissidents of their time, this is one of the only bands that has truly earned that terminology. Emerging in the late 60's in soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, their music was literally band, forcing the members to hold secret jam sessions and concerts that were often busted or ended in riots. Even their name is a remembrance of living under the rule of a foreign occupation. These guys really deserve a Pivo!

Riding in from Tuscon, Arizona this desperado-indie band will rope you in with their folk-guitar tunes. Singer-songwriter-guitarist-pianist-cowboy-hero: Howe Gelb is the leader of the group, which has mothered other spin off bands like Calexico.
Americana Splendor.

The Other Venice Film Festival 2008
One of the most energy conscious communities of Southern California, Venice beach plays host to the ONLY solar powered film festival on the planet. Boasting 90 films, live music, art shows and more, this is an amazing feat when you think about it. The call for alternative energy sources can be heard across the globe, and the challenge has been met and conquered by this festival.

Red Forest
Walking into the Ukrainian Red Forest, artists Eundayo and Johnny "KMNDZ" draw comparisons between what is considered the most radioactive place on the planet, and effects of decadence upon  American Society. After the passing of the AIG bail-out and the recent actions of our current administration, I think it is clear how crippling greed can really be.

This UK soul sista is the re-incarnation of Ella, Sarah, Billy, and Nina all in one. One would never expect that this blond Brit beauty could have such a bold and soulful voice. In short the girl has got a silver set of pipes that will make you get down, shake it, and beg for Mercy.
